About ASCII Motion Studio & methodology

How ASCII Motion Studio works, which inputs it supports, what its results mean and where its limits apply.

ASCII Motion Studio

Build character art that survives the trip from preview to download. The tool measures the ink density of its own geometric pixel glyphs, compensates for their rectangular cells and preserves the same rendering in PNG and offline HTML. Start with a still image or a short sequence of your own image frames.

How we build a check

This workbench processes supported inputs locally. We test calculations, file structure and generated artifacts using independent readers or known fixtures where available. The example runs the same processing path as a supplied input; it does not stand in for checking your own result.

Limits and updates

Still PNG/JPEG only: 1–12 files, up to 10 MiB each and 24 MiB combined. SVG, HTML, GIF, WebP, APNG input and video are not supported.,Each image: at most 16 megapixels and 8,192 pixels on either side. Animation frames must share their oriented dimensions. Large inputs are locally downsampled to at most 960 pixels on their longest side before cell averaging.,20–160 columns, up to 160 rows, 120,000 cells across the sequence, and 16 million exported pixels in total. Processing stops after 60 seconds and can be cancelled.,The built-in printable ASCII alphabet has a deliberate 5×7 pixel style. PNG/HTML preserve it; TXT appearance depends on the destination font and line spacing. No automatic image cropping, GIF/video decoding, audio, persistent saving or cloud upload. If a specification changes or a result appears incorrect, send the relevant source URL and a non-sensitive reproduction to kitforma@outlook.com.

Open-source components

The tools use self-hosted open-source components appropriate to each format, including PDF.js, pdf-lib, fflate, SheetJS, MediaInfo by MediaArea.net SARL and others. Component versions and licenses. MediaInfo license · fflate license.
