Image to ASCII art — local pixel preview, text editing & animation frames
Build character art that survives the trip from preview to download. The tool measures the ink density of its own geometric pixel glyphs, compensates for their rectangular cells and preserves the same rendering in PNG and offline HTML. Start with a still image or a short sequence of your own image frames.
ASCII Motion Studio
A deterministic pixel alphabet keeps preview and image exports consistent. No upload, font download or platform account is needed.
Supported scope: Still PNG/JPEG only: 1–12 files, up to 10 MiB each and 24 MiB combined. SVG, HTML, GIF, WebP, APNG input and video are not supported. · Each image: at most 16 megapixels and 8,192 pixels on either side. Animation frames must share their oriented dimensions. Large inputs are locally downsampled to at most 960 pixels on their longest side before cell averaging. · 20–160 columns, up to 160 rows, 120,000 cells across the sequence, and 16 million exported pixels in total. Processing stops after 60 seconds and can be cancelled. · The built-in printable ASCII alphabet has a deliberate 5×7 pixel style. PNG/HTML preserve it; TXT appearance depends on the destination font and line spacing. No automatic image cropping, GIF/video decoding, audio, persistent saving or cloud upload.

Does this upload my image or use an AI service?
No. Files are read and processed in a local browser worker. The generated example is drawn from numeric shapes. Neither original images nor frame text are sent to a conversion server or stored in browser storage. Download files can contain your derived artwork, so review them before sharing.
Why does the text look different after pasting into a chat or document?
TXT preserves characters, spaces and line breaks but cannot embed font, color or line height. Proportional fonts, whitespace collapse, line wrapping and different glyph shapes change the picture. Use a monospace font and a line-height-to-character-width ratio matching the displayed 6×cell-height geometry. PNG and offline HTML preserve the built-in pixel rendering directly.
Can I upload a GIF, video or animated PNG?
No. This release accepts still PNG and JPEG files. Select up to 12 equal-size exported image frames to build a sequence. APNG input is explicitly rejected rather than silently taking its first frame. The result can be downloaded as an animated PNG, a passive HTML player and a ZIP of individual images and text frames.
What does calibrated glyph brightness mean here?
The tool counts actual lit pixels in each character of its fixed 5×7 pixel alphabet. It sorts the palette by ink coverage and normalizes that palette’s lightest and densest glyphs to the available tone range. It then maps sampled image brightness to the nearest glyph, optionally diffusing quantization error. This does not make characters photometrically identical to the original image.
Can I edit the characters and undo the change?
Yes. Open the frame editor, replace printable ASCII characters, and keep the same line count and width. Apply the edit to update the preview. Move or remove frames, undo up to 20 editing steps, or reset to the original conversion. Prepare edited exports in the editor; the initial downloads remain the original conversion.
Will the animation start automatically?
The live preview starts only when you press Play. Offline HTML starts paused and respects reduced motion. The APNG file is an animation format and many viewers play it automatically; choose the still PNG or frame ZIP when motion is undesirable. No GIF, MP4, audio track or autoplay guarantee for external viewers is provided.
Sources & assumptions
Formats, algorithms and supported features are documented below. Check the stated scope and inspect your output before using it.
- PNG specification, including animation control and frame chunks ↗
The exporter writes actual PNG and APNG chunks with checksums and frame timing. An animated PNG is not a GIF or video file.
- Canvas image decoding: createImageBitmap ↗
Still-image pixels are decoded locally, with image orientation handled by the browser. Browser image color management can affect source sampling.
- CSS prefers-reduced-motion ↗
The offline HTML starts paused and suppresses CSS animation when reduced motion is requested.
- HTML preformatted text element ↗
HTML text needs explicit whitespace and font geometry; a TXT file carries no font or style.
